National Capital Area to Tallinn, Estonia
July 24 – August 8
Estimated Cost: $1450

After a quick hop across the Atlantic, we will be greeted by our new Estonian friends.  The first week will be spent getting to know the ‘real’ Estonia through the eyes of local Romance members.  Our Tallinn hosts have planned a wonderful week to help us get acquainted with this northern European gem.

After we say fond goodbyes to our Estonian hosts, we will motor on to Riga, the capital of Latvia.  On the way we will stop for lunch in Pärnu. A historic city with surviving medieval ramparts, Parnu was once a port city that rivaled Tallinn and Riga.  More recently it has transformed into a health center and seaside resort.

On our full day in Riga, we will enjoy a city tour by bus and a walking tour of Old Riga to see the most interesting sites: Riga Castle, Dome Cathedral, St. Peter’s Church, the buildings of the Great and Small Guild Halls, the fortification wall of Riga, the Swedish Gate, and the Latvian Parliament building.  We will visit the Occupation Museum, the Monument of Liberty, Brivibas Boulevard, and Central Market, and also walk in the district of Art Nouveau buildings.

We depart Riga and cross into Lithuania to the city of Kaunas.  After a Kaunas city tour, we depart for Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania for a two- night stay.  On the way we will stop in Trakai, the medieval capital of Lithuania, nestled in a beautiful region of lakes, forest and hills. It was once a stronghold and residence of Lithuania’s Grand Dukes. Trakai Castle is a spectacular complex of defensive fortifications located on an island. The castle was founded in the 14th century by Duke Gediminas as the centre of the capital.

We depart Vilnius and cross back into Latvia to our destination of Sigulda.  On the way we will visit the Rundale Palace  http://www.rundale.net/index.php?l=2  where we will have lunch.  Rundale Palace lies at a distance of 70 km from Riga. It was built in the first part of the 18th century by the Italian architect F. B. Rastrelli, the baroque genius from Italy who created many of St. Petersburg’s finest buildings including the Winter Palace. Today this palace is subtly restored; it is the most magnificent masterpiece of baroque architecture in the Baltic States.  Our final destination is Sigulda and the Gauja National Park, 60 kilometers NE of Riga, it is a region called “Latvia Switzerland”.

We will tour Sigulda  with visits to the Turaida Castle, built in the 13th century as the residence of the Bishop of Riga, and Sigulda Castle, a residence of the Master of the Livonian Order.  Departing Sigulda, we will travel to Cesis  http://www.cesis.lv/en/ where we will lunch and visit the Cesis Castle and the Old Park.

Once upright, the amount of hot air put in them is limited or else the balloon will take off. Pilots all turn on their propane tanks at the same time and the balloons begin to glow. The array of colors is an unforgettable sight!

UGANDA: The Pearl of Africa can very well be a life altering experience — a stirring, moving, enlightening, and exciting adventure!

Join this incredible journey to Uganda located on the equator just north of Lake Victoria. With a special focus on singles’s daily life in the farming community, the trip will be especially interesting to singles associated with agriculture. Visit subsistence farmers who are providing for their families, improving their agricultural practices and marketing opportunities, educating their children, and accessing a limited health care system. Visit with them about how they live a life without all the modern conveniences we take for granted. Life is a physically intensive effort in Uganda, but you will be impressed with the warmth and gentleness of the singles who often eke out an existence on only a small patch of ground.

In Kampala, meet with U.S. Embassy representatives about U.S. relations in Uganda, U.S. support agencies such as ACDI/VOCA (Agricultural Cooperative Development International/Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance), and faculty at Makerere University. Shop for souvenirs in a local arts and crafts village.

Complete the tour with a nine day safari at several national parks within Uganda. The parks are spectacular, in locations ranging from volcanic craters to grassy plains to tropical forest. As a result, the parks have one of the highest bio diversity ratings in the world.

Discover New Zealand
October 2007 (25 days)
Estimated Cost: $3455

If you would like to see the most spectacular scenery in the world and make friends at the same time, then this is the adventure for you!

Begin your journey with three traditional Romance homestays in Western Waikato, New Plymouth and Wanganui on the North Island.

The Western Waikato Marriage Agency is located just outside the city of Hamilton where the serpentine beauty of the Waikato River is maximized at every opportunity. Discover parks, gardens and river walks where the forethought of the town planners is plain to see. The mighty Waikato River travels through the region at 425 kilometers from end to end and is the country’s longest river. You and your hosts will explore the area on foot as you meander your way along the paths surrounding the area. The costal city of New Plymouth is known for its excellent botanic gardens and picturesque views of Mount Taranaki. Wanganui is located on the coast with sandy beaches. There is a river running through the middle of the city with a paddle steamer and jet boating in the upper reaches. The area is surrounded by farms and orchards and the climate of the area is alleged to be the second most temperate climate in the world.

After your time on the North Island ferry over to the South Island for a spectacular eight-day tour, where you will see breathtaking scenery that has been featured in motion pictures. From the city of Blenheim you’ll go to Hokitika via Paparoa National Park known for its Pancake Rocks. These fascinating limestone formations are eroded rock layers that look like stacks of pancakes. From Hokitika to Wanaka, alpine villages are set on tranquil lakes, via the glaciers of the Southern Alps. Next stop, Queenstown, where you’ll take a gondola ride. The highlight of your journey will be an overnight cruise on the Milford Sound. Other points of interest on this tour of the South Island will be Te Anau, Twizel, Mt. Cook and Christchurch.

Discover Slovakia
October 21 - 31
Estimated Cost: $1695 (land-only)

Slovakia is a beautiful unspoiled country worth DICOVERY!  Please consider joining Laurie Ann in October to visit and tour much of Slovakia.  In this exchange you will experience four different countries and four or five different Romance groups!

We will meet in Vienna, Austria on October 21, 2007.  From there we will go to the spa and wine town of Piestany, Slovakia for a relaxing afternoon of spa treatments.  Trying the mud will be fun!  The next day we will visit historic sites and have lunch in Trencin with prospective Romance members.  Trencin is an amazing town dominated by a castle on a cliff above a hotel and overlooking the square.  If you go up the stairwell of the hotel, you will see a glass area revealing carvings on the ancient cliff from Roman times, "Caesar was here!"

Our next destination is the High Tetras, mountains that transect the boarder with Poland and were once the site of International ski jumping competitions.  A pristine national park surrounds the sports area with miles of evergreens and fall color.  We will stay in this area, near the town of Poprad, for four nights taking excursions each day to sites of interest.  One of these will be the World Heritage Site, Levoca, a beauty of a city remarkably preserved.  In the church there we will see the largest wooden altarpiece in the world.  It is a pilgrimage site.  I saw a group from Portugal moved to tears in front of this magnificent creation.  We will also have an excursion to Zakopane, Poland and Spisky Hrad, the largest castle in Eastern Europe.  Viewing this alone is breathtaking....it extends up and over and beyond a hill, like a fortress and will be ours to explore and learn the history of this area.

Next we will go to Hungary, where half the group will stay two nights with the Romance of Budapest while the other half will join our old friends from the Romance of Szechesferharvar, only a short distance away.  We will all spend a day touring historic Budapest together, in the company of our new FF friends.

Finally we will return to Bratislava where we will spend three nights with the Romance of Bratislava.  They will show us the city as well as sites along the Danube and treat us to a marvelous farewell. This will be a great chance to Discover Slovakia as well as connect with many new friends.

On the tenth day, singles will be returned to the Vienna airport or have the opportunity to enjoy an optional extension in Vienna with a guided tour of the city, a free afternoon to explore, and hopefully a chance to meet and eat dinner with the Romance of Vienna.

The land cost for the October 21 - October 31, 2007 Discover Slovakia program will be $1695 including most meals, all lodging, adObjectives, coach service and an English speaking guide.  In that you can probably find better fares and more flexibility by getting your own air, the exchange will begin and end at the Vienna Airport.  The post-exchange Vienna extension will be an additional $140 .  (Matchmaking Expert will get this info as well as checking with the Romance of Vienna, in which case we could take out the word "hopefully" in the paragraph above.)  This is one of the Discovery Programs Romance is offering to celebrate its 10th anniversary and will be open to singles from all Romance groups.

CA web page will also be available on the website with appropriate application materials and the complete itinerary.
